Food Blogs - Photography

Many skills go into creating a food blog - cooking, writing, computer savvy, and the ability to take photographs of food that make you want to reach into your computer and eat what's in the photo on the screen. For those of you relatively unfamiliar with the world of food and cooking blogs, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite food blogs that feature gorgeous photography. For those of you who have "been around the block" so to speak regarding food blogs, please bear with me.

Kuidaore by J in Singapore

Nordljus by Keiko in the UK

Orangette by Molly

101 Cookbooks by Heidi Swanson in San Francisco

Delicious Days by Nicky and Oliver in Munich

Delicious! Delicious! by Caryn in Culver City, California

Chubby Hubby, Singapore

Oswego Tea by Michèle in Paris

The Scent of Green Bananas by Santos in Guam

She Who Eats by Chika in Japan

Such beautiful photography! Which leads me to a question... how do you get the nice "unfocused" background which allows the food to be the focus of the photograph? Just got my first digital camera... about to post my first pics tonight and a bit nervous... LOL.

What a great photo! But then your pictures are always great. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Elise, You should also check out Santos' photos at the Scent of Green Bananas and Chika's at She Who Eats. Of course your pictures are great also because they always come with such excellent recipes.

Michele - A telephoto lens will give you a more narrow range of focus. The longer the lens, the narrower the range.

Elise, I'm honored to be among the gorgeous blogs you've chosen! Thank you. I've long admired Heidi, Keiko, and the rest, but it's only recently that I've learned about Kuidaore and Chubby Hubby and their lovely, mouthwatering photos. Yum.

Oh, and by the way, I love the light in this shot of yours too!

hi Elise, thank you so much for mentioning me among such a talented group, I'm very honoured! And I agree with Molly, that shot looks great, and your camera looks impressive!

Hi Michele - I don't really know what I'm doing with this camera, it's the one doing all the work. I just take the photo as close as I can on the autofocus setting. With my old camera I had to do a lot of touch-up background blurring using Photoshop on my computer. Just remember - NO FLASH, and it helps to have a tripod to steady the camera so that the image isn't blurry. If your camera has a macro setting, use it for the close shots.

Hi Andrea - thanks! And I love your new "photo studio" ;-)

Hi Fran - Ah yes, Santos has gorgeous photos too at Scent of Green Bananas, and Chika as well at She Who Eats. I'll add them to the list.

Hi Molly - Thanks for stopping by! I love Orangette, the photographs and the writing.

Hi Michèle - Thanks for saying hello! This camera (the Canon Rebel XT) is pretty cool. I don't know how to use half of the features. The good news is that the half I do use are all automatic settings, making it eeeeasy to take nice photos. I have learned that lighting is everything. You don't need a super camera if you've got great light, though of course, having a cool camera helps....

There is an interesting article this week in Tidbits #809, 12 Dec 05, by Charles Maurer, which discusses some tips for digital photography. Though written for the Macintosh audience, there are some very good pointers for any digital photographer. Lou

Elise, Thanks so much for referencing my site. I'm humbled to be included with that group of bloggers! Photography can be so difficult at times, so your compliment is an encouragement to keep at it.

I wish I could take pictures like these - I have a pretty decent digital camera (Sony Cybershot) but it seems like you need a real nice Canon or Nikon to get these kinds of pictures.
