Julie and Julia - Trailer

The trailer for the upcoming Julie & Julia movie is out! Meryl Streep plays the venerable Julia Child and Amy Adams, the blogger Julie Powell who chronicled cooking through Julia's Mastering The Art of French Cooking through her Julie/Julia Project blog. The film is based on Julie Powell's book of the same name,
as well as Julia Child's My Life in France.

I don't know about you, but this is one movie I really want to see this summer. Debuts August 7. I loved watching Julia Child on PBS as a kid, and for much of my childhood thought that The French Chef really was French, and that French people just spoke English but with a high-pitched Pasadena accent. Had no idea what she was actually doing, but loved watching her cut up chickens, much as I imagine kids like watching the Food Network these days.

Can you imagine a better person to play beloved Julia than Meryl Streep? Apparently director Nora Ephron bumped into Meryl Streep in New York, told Meryl she was working on a script about Julia Child, which inspired Meryl launched into a perfect Julia imitation. (Full story on USA Today.)

Amy Adams plays a decidedly more G-rated version of Julie Powell than the blogger/author is known to be. Which is probably a good thing considering I imagine the producers want to reach a wide audience. Julie Powell's writing and stories might be hilarious, but they can be a little disconcerting if you aren't prepared for all the f-bombs she launches so freely in her work.

Bravo for Nora Ephron for taking this on. Can't wait to enjoy Meryl declaring "Bon Appetit!" on the big screen!

I don't think they could have found a better Julia than Meryl Streep. this ought to be amazing!.

I grew up watching Julia as well. She along with Martin Yan, Jaques Pepin and Italian Chef Pasquale were my first inspirations in cooking outside what I knew. they made me long to try something other than what I'd grown up with and inspired me to try new things.

I can't wait to see this one!

I often wonder if there's anything Meryl Streep can't do? That voice -- where did she get Julia's voice?

O my God, looking at the trailer I already had to laugh! I hadn't heard about this movie as sometimes news travels a bit slower to this part of the world, but do I want to see this movie!! Thanks for posting the trailer!

With the sequel to be "Elise & Julia"? ;^)
I agree - probably none better than Meryl Streep to pull this one off.
Although laughing at her in my youth (who can forget Dan Aykroyd's hilarious SNL "Save the liver!" parody? http://www.hulu.com/watch/3523/saturday-night-live-the-french-chef ), I came to realize just how big of a stamp she left on the culinary world, and what an inspiration she was to countless wanna-be chefs - myself included.
And that lobster poppiing out of the pot bit? Yeah, that's happened to me.

LOL, how did I ever miss that Dan Ackroyd skit? Hilarious! (have added it to the list of links) ~Elise

I, being Canadian, would like to know how it came to be that Julie Powell came to be associated so closely with Julia Child? Is there a special connection?

Julie Powell set out to cook every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking and she documented it in hilarious style in her blog, and then her book. ~Elise

I saw this trailer for the first time Thursday

I can not wait to see this movie! I may have to fly to Atlanta to watch with my sister, my favorite cooking buddy!

I can't help but wonder if making the a film about Julia alone couldn't have been pulled off, but I'm sure this will be a delight. As with miss Powell, she touched so many lives (our family even named one of our cats Julia).

I couldn't read the book because the language was too much, but I look forward to the movie. Thank goodness they toned it down.

I can't wait for this movie. Meryl Streep has Julia Child down perfectly (no surprise there!).

This looks like the sweetest, sassiest movie to come out in a long time. Yay for foodie blogs in the movies! :)

I've read both books. I'm so excited to see the movie!

Elise,

I am really looking forward to this movie. I saw a trailer for it last week and was telling my mom about it today. I'm trying to set up a date with my mom and my sister to go see it. We all love to cook, and have referred Mom as "Julia" for years!

Thanks for a great blog, and great recipes!

I'd pay any amount of money to see Meryl Streep as Julia. I often tell people I learned to cook by watching Julia on TV. Maybe I'll learn to act by watching Meryl play Julia.

I seriously can't wait! I followed Julie's blog daily way back when she was doing it and I couldn't wait to read about her adventures.

I saw the trailer for this for the first time last night! It looks as though it'll be a great movie, will definitely drag my husband along to go see!

OMG, I'm laughing already. How wonderful to see Meryl take this on! Reminds me that no one is perfect, and to cook all one had to do is love food.

Thanks for posting the trailer (which I haven't watched yet). I'm also eagerly awaiting the movie. I love both of the actresses playing the leads, so am thrilled with the casting. It's funny you mention the G-rated version thing; I was thinking earlier today that I hoped the movie makers would not sanitize Powell. Having read much of her blog and her book, I have such a strong sense of her personality and so forth that it would be a big disappointment if that's lost.

I agree that Meryl is great as Julia Child and can't wait to see the movie.
For all of you Julia's fans, if you visit the Washington, DC Area, the National Museum of American History has in exhibition with Julia Child's kitchen. She donated the kitchen to the Museum when she moved back to California. Or you can take a virtual tour here: http://americanhistory.si.edu/juliachild/

Thanks Elise for the trailer.

Enjoy! And Bon Appetite!

I'm with you Elise, this is the summer movie I'm most looking forward to as well! I loved Julie's blog and have always been fascinated by Julia Child.

August 7th can't come soon enough!

Awesome! I read the book when I was vacationing in Costa Rica, so glad it's coming out in a movie, can't wait. Thanks for sharing!

Posted by: waisze on May 6, 2009 11:02 AM

Wow, I had NO IDEA they were making this into a movie! It's one of my favorite books!

Amy Adams definitely seems too "sweet" to be Julie Powell, though, LOL.
